ViTrox College's Engineering Society and Technovation Club came together to organize the first-ever internal Soccer Robots Competition on November 14.
The event welcomed 32 passionate robotics enthusiasts across ViTrox College diploma schools, who formed 16 teams to design, build, and program robots to compete in a soccer tournament held on a specially designed field.
While offering an exciting platform for students to showcase their engineering and coding skills, the competition also served as a testament to the power of practical learning. The event emphasized the importance of applying theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, fostering creativity and innovation among participants.
According to Kong Jing Han, the chairperson of the event, the tournament was initially suggested by Dr Vernoon and was put into actions by two student clubs in later.
“The event was very successful and it gave us strong satisfaction when we saw the participants were enjoying this tournament. They communicate to come out with the different strategies although many of them did not partner with each other before,” she said.
While the competition was a success, it was not without challenges. Kong recalled delays in receiving components due to finance issues and the pressure of preparing everything at the last minute.
"We had to buy extra components to keep testing, but thanks to my committee's dedication, we managed to set everything up just in time," Kong expressed her gratitude to the committees.
Additionally, the team faced difficulties in securing sponsorship for food and beverages. Fortunately, City Wellness Pharmacy stepped in to provide support which later contribute tremendous to the tournament.
Looking ahead, ViTrox College's Engineering Society and Technovation Club plan to turn the competition into an annual event in curating students’ interest in robotic design, including those who are from the business background.
“Although we only have a few students from Business Studies who joined us for the pre-tourment workshop in coaching robotic buildings, we are confident that more students will be motivated and join us next year,” Kong said.
ViTrox College believes that practical learning is essential in preparing students for the challenges of the tech industry. We are committed to ensuring that our students are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to drive innovation and excel in their future careers.
